The Antique cabinet hardware you never had

With the popularity of rustic décor these days, the market is going wild for any antique pieces of furniture with antique cabinet hardware intact. If you are looking for antique pieces to finish your home's look, you may be realizing just how expensive these pieces are. They are going for top dollar at auctions and estate sales. So, how do you keep within a budget and still have the look you want? Create your own antique.
It's a 2-3 day project that can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars, while still getting the look you want for your home decor.

Once you have the furniture and antique cabinet hardware you will need a few more items:

Latex Paint (whatever base color you would like the piece to be)
Smoky glaze
Paint Brushes
Sandpaper
Furniture wax
Lint-free rags

First, you need to just be down to the wood on your cabinets. That means any hardware needs to go.  Cover any flooring or counters in the room, so the paint and glaze only get on the items you want them to be on.

Now you need to give your furniture a first coat of the latex paint and let it dry.

Next, it's time to apply the glaze. You don’t want to soak the brush when you do this, because you only want to apply a thin coat of the glaze over the paint. The only areas you may want to apply it a little thicker are corners, as an accent. Let this layer dry.

Feel the furniture piece all over to make sure the glaze is completely dry and is not sticky. Once it's dry, you can pull out the sandpaper and get to work. Depending on how worn you want the piece to look, you can decide how hard to push on the sandpaper. The harder you push the more layers it will take off. You don’t want to overdo it, or you're back at the beginning. Places that would see more wear on the piece are ones you should sand down more, such as corners and edges.

Sweep away all the wood dust.

Now, you need to use a rag to rub furniture wax into the entire piece. Buff when dry.

If you like this look, you can stop here. But if you want a little more antique look, there is another accent to add. Mix some black acrylic paint with water. Dip the end of your brush in the mixture, blotting most of it off. Now flick the brush at the furniture piece. The little dots of black will add a more aged look to the piece.

If you want to be partially telling the truth when you tell people, ‘yes that's an antique' you may want to look for antique cabinet hardware. Hinges, knobs, pulls and other antique cabinet hardware are still more expensive than the modern pieces, but they are more affordable than a whole furniture piece and can make your antique replica look more convincing. If you would prefer to keep the budget lower, there are antique cabinet hardware reproductions that are around the same cost as the modern pieces. Either way, those replica or real antique cabinet hardware pieces are going to substantially add to the overall look of your furniture.
