The Right Cabinet Hardware

If you have a kitchen with presence many of the items in it are often large and in charge. If your cabinets are part of that equation, you are likely giving your cabinet hardware a heck of a workout.

Over time, your cabinet hardware is just going to give in, and you will be left with saggy cabinet doors. You can’t get too mad at the kitchen cabinet hardware you own. Gravity is in effect and it's and it’s going to take its toll eventually.

Really, when it comes down to it, you’re the one who put the heavy door there in the first place, so you had to expect the cabinet hardware was going to weaken eventually.

Luckily this is a pretty easy fix.  What has happened is that the weight of the door, along with the usage of the door being opened and closed, is pulling the cabinet hardware away from the wood.

The solution may be as simple as purchasing a few new hinges and replacing them on the door, to make it like new again.

It’s possible that there has not been any damage to the cabinet hardware and the problem is with the cabinets.  The pulling of the hardware on the wood frame may have stripped the hole that is holding the hinge to the cabinet or door. In this case, you need to do a quick fix job. You will have to remove the door from the cabinet and drill new hinge holes to hold it in place.

It's a simple job that you can do on a Saturday morning or afternoon. First you will need a wooden dowel that is the same size as the screw hole, some wood glue, a hand saw and sandpaper.

Get your drill, and a drill bit that is about the size of the hole the screws were in.  Drill out the existing hole, making the whole surface smooth. Put a little glue in the hole and insert the dowel. Cut the piece of dowel to the same length as the hole. You may want to sand it down to make it even if your sawing was less than perfect.

Wait until the glue completely dries.

Now, use a very small drill bit to drill the center of the dowel. You are not trying to drill a big hole for the screw to fit into just a small one so you can guide it into place when you are ready to re-hang the cabinet door.

At this point you should be able to pop the screws and cabinet hardware back in place and be good as new.

Tip: if you had been thinking of changing out the knobs or pulls on your cabinet doors, this is something that would be easily done when you already have the doors off to redo the other cabinet hardware. While the dowel glue is drying, you could use that time productively to spruce up your cabinet's overall looks with new designer pulls and knobs.
