Deciding What Needs Redoing in the Kitchen – It starts with the right door pulls

When you give your kitchen the annual once over to decide what needs to be cleaned, repainted or replaced, you want to be thorough with your inspection, but not break the bank at the same time.
One big mistake often made is by people who look at the kitchen cabinets and decide they have to go, when a simple upgrade of door pulls or some paint may do the trick.
Go into your kitchen survey realizing you don’t want to replace the cabinets unless you have to. It's a big job and a costly one at that.

Before you pull out the tools and start tearing the kitchen apart, look at what it really needs. Make a list down to the tiniest of details that you can think of. Even if you notice one door pulls a little oddly, or that the door pulls themselves are a little lose, jot it down.

Now it's time to prioritize the list. Start by making a note of the repairs that you can't bear to walk into the kitchen without them being done. Next, make your list of the repairs that would make you gripe less about your kitchen, and finally just the ones that you'd like to have done when the time and money are available.

Now, figure out a budget. All projects need a budget. If you think you can just start the work without having a set amount of money to spend in mind, you are going to find yourself with maxed out credit cards and a half finished project.  Create a budget and start to find out which pieces of your list can be completed within the budget you have in mind. Always give yourself a little wiggle room on the budget. It never fails on a project that when you think you have budgeted for everything, you will come up with something you forgot to buy.

Looking at your cabinets, you need to decide if the cabinets themselves need to go, or if you can resurface them. Unless they are breaking, cracking and are generally unsafe, chances are a little resurfacing will do with the cabinets, instead of being out hundreds or thousands of dollars to replace them.

If you are resurfacing the cabinets you can make them look completely different by staining or painting them and adding new door pulls and knobs. You will be amazed at the difference it will make.

One place you may want to splurge is on a new counter top. Countertops get a lot of use, and often a lot of abuse.  Things are regularly plopped down and banged on the surface, not to mention all the people who seem to think it is a replacement cutting board when they are too lazy to pull the real thing out. All those dings and scratches are taking away from the finished look of the kitchen.

Resurfacing your cabinets and replacing your countertop may make you believe you suddenly have a whole new kitchen.
