If you are the kind who likes to be able to fix a problem as you see it in your house, you are going to need to have the tools on hand to be able to make the repairs that may be necessary. You need to create a home repair hardware cabinet.
Think about the little repairs you are likely to encounter and make sure you have the tools you need to tackle the problem. You may even want to dedicate one space to these items, and call it your home repair hardware cabinet. Some people already have a similar space in their home, likely called a junk drawer, that has a lot of odds and ends that can be used when working on the house, but why not have a dedicated space where you will be able to find the items you need without digging through all sorts of other things you've forgotten about.
This doesn’t just have to be for repairing something that is broken, but it can also be the items needed to improve or decorate your home as you find new things to display.
Some of the more common home repair hardware cabinet items are things that you would use to make repairs:
Wood Putty
Wood Glue
Sandpaper
Screws
Hammer
Screwdriver
Drill bits
Some of the items that may be useful for the decorating side of things include:
Small nails
Hooks
Wire
Other items that may be used to hang pictures or decorations
The needs of one home repair hardware cabinet will differ from the next, by the items in a home. Over time you will add to this collection with items such as caulking that matches your fixtures, touch up paints and stains that match your furniture, and even leather repair kits for any leather furniture you may have.
The idea is not that this is a complete collection when you start, but as you realize what things are needed to repair parts of your home, you put them all in the same place, so you can have them anytime a need arises and avoid having to buy them over and over again, because you can't remember where you put the ones you bought last time.
While you are first creating this home repair hardware cabinet, think of organization. There is nothing more annoying than trying to find one particular screw in the bottom of a drawer with hundreds of screws, bolts and nails rolling out.
For screws, nails, bolts and other small items, a snap-shut organizer with small compartments is a good solution. These organizers will hold a number of sizes and shapes of screws, nuts, bolts, staples, or other tiny items you will need, and you will be able to quickly find them when the time comes.
Also if you have a lot of repair items that come in tubes, you may want to get a vertical organizer. This could be as simple as putting an office pencil and pen organizer in the cabinet so all the tubes and other thin items can stand upright and be easier to spot when you need them.
