If you have an older house, one of the things you may not like so much about it is the fact that it has an older kitchen. That usually translates to smaller kitchen design ideas. Many old homes have kitchens that are much smaller than all the other rooms in the home. Even in current homes, the kitchen is often one of the smaller spaces in a house, even though many families have moved out of the dining room and into the kitchen for meals. So how do you make this space go further? Here are a few kitchen design ideas to use that compact space to it's fullest.
Smaller Appliances
Many kitchen design ideas for smaller kitchens start with reclaiming as much space as possible. This is done through looking carefully before buying any appliances. Many current day appliances are much smaller than they used to be, and will fit into a more compact space. Another benefit of this is that those appliances are often more energy efficient and will help you save a few dollars on your power bill as well. Make sure to combine appliances where you can such as combining the cook top and oven instead of having them as separate entities. Microwaves can often be fit right into the cabinetry to save countertop space. Other appliances you don't use regularly can get out of the kitchen and be stored in the garage, pantry or a closet until you need them.
Storage
All kitchens need a lot of storage. Small kitchens are often desperate for this feature, but don’t seem to have the space for it. This is when it's time to expand your kitchen design ideas. First instead of looking at the shelving you have, look above it. Do you have room to fit more shelves in on top of the ones you already have? You can install high pantry cabinets to offer more space for those special serving pieces or appliances that you only use once in a blue moon. You know where they are, and they are nearby, but they are out of the way and leave you more room for the other things you need.
When picking cabinet colors, using lighter colored paints, or doors that have glass fronts will help add light to the room and make it seem more spacious. You can even use light wood, but a lot of dark wood cabinets can make the space seem more tight and cold.
Don't Over Clutter
A lot of people like to add little 'touches of home' to their kitchen, and that's fine as long as you don't overdo it. You can add a few items that make your kitchen more personally yours, but try to avoid getting into a collectors mindset, looking for the next cute thing that goes with the collection and stacking the pieces everywhere you can think of. As the space get more and more cluttered, even with small items, it makes the room also seem smaller, and a confining space.
