Getting the Upper Hand on Kitchen Renovations

When you are thinking of undertaking kitchen renovations you likely have a lot of ideas in mind. While it’s tempting to just jump in and start making changes and updating parts of the room, you need to do a little planning. Piecing together this process could have you end up with a kitchen that is not quite what you wanted, but also not something you can fix. Imagine if you were to decide to put in new cabinets before you measured to see if they would fit. They could end up a bit too long, and be sticking out in the hallway to the next room, or they could be too short and leave an unsightly gap between the refrigerator and the countertop.

You need to start by knowing the facts about your kitchen before you even consider what to do with it. Start with a sketch of your current kitchen. You need to measure the room from corner to corner and then measure the items you have inside to see where you are using the space you currently have. The best way to do this is with graph paper.  Once you have made the current measurements, you can see how much of your kitchen square footage is being used for various purposes, such as storage.
Now you need to think about the things that you could use in the kitchen. Do you need more counter top space? What about more pantry area? Or, would you like to bring a table and chairs into the kitchen so your family can eat some of their informal meals here? Depending on which of these kitchen renovations are more important, the layout of your kitchen could change substantially. Make your priority list of the changes you would like to see in this space and then use a new piece of paper to draw out how you can achieve these priorities. Remember a room is three-dimensional, not just two-dimensional. If you need more storage but also want to fit a table into the space, you can consider kitchen renovations that would expand your cabinets vertically to open up more floor space.
As you work on these new drawings, remember to take things you cannot change into consideration. Doors, windows and radiators are not flexible items when doing kitchen renovations. Unless you are planning to tear the whole room apart and start rebuilding this part of your house from scratch, the doors, and other items are going to have to be worked into the kitchen renovation plans. Make a note of which way doors swing and how the other items may effect the workings of this room.

If you have not been looking at the latest trends in kitchen renovations, you should also open yourself up to the possibility that there are designs out there you have never considered. You may want to look through a few design magazines and spend some time in your local home décor store to see the options on the market for storage, seating, counters, and other things that may help you meet some of the desires on your kitchen wish list.
